Degree Show Rota
Below is the rota for staffing the rooms for the Degree Show. If a room is not staffed, then it will be closed so you must make sure that you are there on time for your allocated time and, if you cannot make that time, that you swap with someone who can. Copies of the rota are on my door (ET22) and third year noticeboard
Any problems, please speak to Philip immediately.

NOTES:
1) Please enjoy this, and look enthusiastic! You are there to make sure no equipment or student work is stolen or tampered with. And to ensure that visitors are safe, which is why there are two of you allocated to each room at all times. If a visitor faints, for example, one of you must stay with them while the other goes for help. So if there are not two of you, as allocated on this Rota, that room cannot be opened to the public. When you start your “shift” make sure you know where the nearest fire exits are. But you are also there to interact with any visitors, ask them if there’s more they’d like to know about the course, the Uni or the work. Be welcoming, enthusiastic, pro-active and professional at all times. Especially if you are welcoming visitors in the Foyer.
2) There will be busy times and there will be boring times, that’s the nature of these shows. You are there to represent the work and the student body, so don’t let your professionalism slip even if you’re bored. All kinds of folk will turn up at the most unpredictable times! Some may be future employers.
3) If you cannot attend for your allotted time slot(s) it is YOUR responsibility to swap with someone who can do it. DON’T JUST NOT TURN UP. If you do, then that room or even the whole show may have to be shut down. The Festival is open to the public so there are real Health and Safety requirements.
4) Some people have two time slots, some have only one. It’s the luck of the draw. In some cases (Jenice, Nick, the Blaze Team) students have been allocated even more than two.
5) The students allocated the Analogue Radio Studio need to also take regular strolls around the Ground Floor Corridor to make sure everything is OK. There is photography on display there and it is a Public Space.
6) It was decided in the steering group that the student Dress Code at both days of the Festival should be Smart Dress, ie as if you were going for an interview. Not Smart Casual, but Smart!
In an emergency, ring the Department Office, but it is YOUR show and, I repeat, it is YOUR responsibility to arrange a swap if you cannot do the given time-slot and YOUR responsibility to be here well on time. Bw Philip Draycott
Degree Show Requirements Update
The absolute latest deadline for the trailer and the full length videos is FRIDAY 4PM.
From then on, Luke and Mark will be locked away at home all bank holiday making our showreels. So the least you could do is follow the instructions on the weblog correctly.
As a result of most of the tapes and CDs and DVDs being poorly labelled we are only going to include the title of the project on the idents that precede and follow your work. For the rest of your information and details the visitor’s will have to read the brochure. The mess we’re having to deal with the tapes and the statements is unbelievable so we will no longer be taking artist statements.
Reminders
We need the trailer and the full length work on TWO DIFFERENT DV TAPES because there are two different people doing the work at two different computers in two different cities so please don’t make it any harder than it already is for us. And make sure you put your
- name
- a contact telephone number
- the title of your work
- and whether it is the trailer or the full length video on both the Tape and its Box.
Could the person who has labelled their tapes 1 and 2 please notify me of the title of their project, because if they don’t we won’t include it.
As for the people who have already handed their work in but wrong, don’t worry we’ll sort it out for you. But if your videos were not on a DV Tape and they suffer loss of quality, then it’s your fault.
Thank you to the few that have managed to hand in their work correctly.
The Posters
If you have done nothing so far for the general preparation of the degree show you are needed in the Ellen Terry reception on Friday at 4pm to help with the putting up of the posters.

Photography and ET101
Many thanks to everyone who turned up today and painted the boards.
You managed to finish all the plinths and half the boards before rain stopped play.
If anyone has time (Thursday/Friday) then a final burst would finish the job off, all the equipment is under the stairs and the boards that need painting are on the trolley.
Next week on Tuesday at 10.30am we can start constructing and hanging your work, so please ensure that you come in and get your work up. All the Photography work must be up on Wednesday or it will not be included in the final show.
I’m around, but teaching tomorrow and Friday.

Artist statements update
Clarification:
Video cluster, documentary cluster
All artist statements MUST be sent to me by email (Mez: m.packer@coventry.ac.uk) for inclusion on the handout of films being shown in ETG34 at the degree show.
Interactive cluster, photography cluster
You can organise artist statements yourselves. Write them, print them and spray mount them on foam board ready for hanging on the Wednesday prior to the degree show.
Specifications
IF you want to do this by yourself and NOT send your statements to me (interactive and photography ONLY) See the post below for info on WHAT and HOW to write it. Once you have written your 25-100 words make sure the font used is a size 12 Helvetica in a dark grey. Also use a small border around the captions to compliment the design. I have included a template below for guidance. The left hand font is Helvetica 12 bold. The right hand font is Helvetica 12 normal.
The template below uses the DO YOU THINK I’M SEXY documentary as an example -thanks guys.
Degree Show Requirements
Degree Show Requirements - This is a word doc you can download and print off and consists of everything below, in this post.
Hello everyone - this is posted on behalf of Miguel and the team who are preparing the showreel so it is VERY IMPORTANT. Please forward it on to everyone, post it up everywhere and ring everyone because it is vital that EVERYONE KNOWS.
Bex, Luke Elwell, Mark Cooper and Miguel are responsible for creating the DVDs that will be played on a loop at the degree show.
They consist of the following;
- The DVD played in ETG34 theatre with full length versions of the final Video productions.
- The DVD with 30 second clips of everyone’s work, including photography students, played in the foyer screens.
What you need to do if your final project was a video production:
- Bring the following inside a clearly labelled envelope (or plastic wallet, etc…) to reception before 4pm on Wednesday 20th and ask for it to be put in Bex’s pigeon hole;
- A digital cut on DV Tape of your final video.
- 2 copies of your artist statement and personal contact details.
- A digital cut on a different DV Tape of a 30 second trailer of your final video. Your artist statement and names will be inserted before and after your video so there is no need to put them inside the trailer. Don’t worry if you already have.
- If you have problems getting a final cut of your final video on to DV Tape and to reception on time email Mark ASAP at markymark1506@googlemail.com
- If you have problems getting a 30 second trailer of your final video on to DV Tape and to reception on time email Luke ASAP at Luke.Elwell@gmail.com
- If you have problems getting 2 copies of your artist statement and personal contact details to reception on time you need to sort your life out! Mez has posted a guide though on http://kpnmstudio.co.uk/310mc/
What you need to do if your final project is photography:
- Bring the following inside a clearly labelled envelope (or plastic wallet, etc…) to reception before 4pm on Wednesday 20th and ask for it to be put in Bex’s pigeon hole;
- 1 copy of your artist statement and personal contact details.
- A digital cut on DV Tape of a 30 second (or less) trailer of your photography project. Your artist statement and names will be inserted before and after your video so there is no need to put them inside the trailer. Don’t worry if you already have.
- If you have problems getting a 30 second trailer of your photography project on to DV Tape and to reception on time email Luke ASAP at Luke.Elwell@gmail.com. He has kindly offered to make the trailers for the photography students but you will need to provide him with copies of your images, a suitable soundtrack (if you want one) and your artist statement with your personal details before the deadline.
- If you have problems writing your artist statement and personal contact details Mez has posted a guide on http://kpnmstudio.co.uk/310mc/
If your final project was anything else, we are not the people administrating your work at the degree show.
These requirements from you are necessary in order for us to be able to have everything ready on time. If don’t meet these requirements we cannot ensure that your work will be exhibited at the degree show.

OK guys here’s the invitation as a JPG - it’s 300kb. Click on this to link to the full file, then right click to save the JPG.
Artist statements:
Like an introduction to a book, your statement presents the fundamental underpinnings of your art; write it for people who are about to read “your book,” not those who’ve already read it. In [25-100 words- edit] provide basic information like WHY YOU MAKE YOUR ART, HOW YOU MAKE IT, WHAT IT’S MADE OUT OF, and perhaps briefly, WHAT YOUR ART MEANS TO YOU. Don’t bog readers down, but rather entice them to want to know more. As with any good first impression, your statement should hook and invite further inquiry, like a really good story is about to be told. Give too little, not too much. ARTBUSINESS.COM
There are various websites like the one above that can give you pointers with this. Get them to me by Tuesday morning at the latest. Mez
Chinese Students
Hi
Karen Arrand will have tutorial time set aside specifically for Chinese students to have a final talk through their final submissions. This will be on Friday 15th and there will be a sign-up sheet outside her door (ET103). Please make every effort to sign up for this.
Cheers

Nearly there!
Hi All
Just a quick note to remind you that final projects are to be handed in at Reception next Friday (15th) between 11-3. Make sure that you have included everything that the module requires and that it a) has your name and SID CLEARLY MARKED on it and b) it is in a form that nothing can get separated (i.e. in a sturdy plastic wallet). There will be a crit on that day between 11-2 in ET34 so that everyone on the module can see the finished projects.
The problems with the Avid server mean that anyone editing downstairs will need an extension. This is a small number of you. Currently, it is looking like it will be up and running on Thursday of this week so you will need a one-week extension. This will need to be negotiated with Philip Draycott, the Year Tutor. The good news is that the technicians have been working really hard to make sure that no stuff was lost in the serve collapse so any work already done should be safe.
URGENT: we need three willing and enthusiastic L3 students to edit together a highlights DVD of L3 final work (video, stills, radio, multimedia) to publicise our Media Festival in ET (28th and 29th May, poster about to be circulated). Also to assemble (with idents and timings) the DVD that will be shown in the two ET Lecture Theatres. This worked smoothly last year and we want the same again, or better! This is exactly the sort of thing which looks good on your professional CV, shows you to be reliable and can give you an extra showtape of your editing skills. Please contact Philip Draycott asap at: philip.draycott@coventry.ac.uk or tel: 07974 984308
Think this is all. Any problems, please see your Academic Tutor or cluster leader or e-mail me
Cheers

Thursday 23rd April at 2pm.
As previously mentioned at the last group critique.
The photography students will be photographing the Media Production students as part of the promotional drive for the final show. They needed three individuals or groups of MP students to photograph, then the University press officer will write a story for local and national press. If you want your work to be included, we still need one more group/story, so turn up at 2pm Thur 23rd April at the Photographic studio (ETG31) and you could be included.
If you miss this opportunity please do not complain if your fellow students receive all the press coverage for the show.
Thanks Paul
